Childhood Immunisation: What Parents Should Know

Vaccines are scheduled at particular ages for a reason. Some are given early because the diseases they prevent are most dangerous in the first months of life; others wait until a child's immune system can mount a durable response. The timing is not arbitrary, and following it gives the best protection at the point of greatest risk.

Mild reactions are expected and reassuring. A low fever, some fussiness, or a tender arm for a day or two reflects the immune system doing exactly what the vaccine is designed to prompt. Serious reactions are rare, and our paediatric team observes children after their first doses so that any concern is addressed on site.

If your child has missed doses, the schedule can almost always be caught up without starting again from the beginning. Bring whatever record you have to the paediatric clinic and we will map out the remaining doses. Partial protection is worth completing at any age.
